I volunteer at 2 local animal shelters in the Detroit area and am a retiree.
My dream is to open an animal santuary for pit bulls who have been slatted for euthaniziation.
If you have any information on grants that would help for funding for this type of project, please let me know.
I saw your story on the Dog Whisperer

The ltteer I sent to the Mayor and City Council members, in case anyone wishes to use all/part of it for their own ltteers:On Thursday, March 11, please vote to implement the Animal Advisory Commission’s Plan for significant improvements to our City’s Animal Services – a plan that reflects the Council’s directive to reduce the killing of lost and homeless pets by increasing live outcomes and reducing shelter intake.A particularly important part of the Plan is the proposal for Austin Pets Alive! to operate a Comprehensive Adoption Program at Town Lake Animal Center. This proposed adoption program will result in the saving of 3,750 lives that are currently dying year after year at TLAC. Further, if the Plan is voted through without APA!’s Comprehensive Adoption Program, it is likely that our city will NOT reach the goal of becoming “No Kill” (90% save rate). Austin Pets Alive! has a proven track record, having saved the lives of 3,500 cats and dogs in just the last 18 months. For the Comprehensive Adoption Program at TLAC, it can leverage its huge volunteer team, foster program, off-site adoption program, and expertise in low-cost, high-volume spay/neuter to move more animals through the program to adoption. And, this can be done without increasing the city’s budget, as APA! is a nonprofit organization and can actively fundraise.Again, please vote to implement the AAC’s Plan, including APA!’s Comprehensive Adoption Program, to make Austin a No-Kill City!

This is really good info. It took us 3-4 years to figure out the issues my dog had and when it was all said and done (and much less $ in my bank account), the "allergies" were really deficiencies in my dog's food. And we were feeding one of the best, premium dog foods on the market. Probably should not mention any names! Anyway, I started feeding my dog a homemade diet and now I have actually found a recipe that is much easier than what I had been doing. my dog is void of "allergies". None. He. Has. None. Here's video that shows how to make it: http://www.dinovite.com/blog/?p=69907 I would try it for a month and see what happens. It took about 45 days but boy what a difference in my dog!

Congrats!! What a beautiful statue! This foundation really excels in implementing out of the box spay and neuter ideas. There are websites and people who think the shelters etc are so bad but it's the sheer volume of animals that come through their respective doors daily. My rescue has bailed and placed over 500 border collies (and other herding dog breeds) in the past four years. If we were all breed it would be excruciating to go to shelters and decide who to save (although I've been known to save a few ankle biters now and again). My point is we are able to save the bulk of the bcs that we find in shelters in so cal but the supply never ends. The best solutions are volunteering, fostering (this is the biggest need and so few people actually do it) and of course spay and neuter. The Heigel Foundation continues to come up with excellent, effective and visible spay and neuter campaigns. We have a few dogs who have "lost their balls" courtesy of the foundation. The only other thing I would like to say on behalf of the dogs and cats "if you are fortunate to own your own home as I am, please give back by sharing your home with a foster pet. It's such a selfless act and it's really not so awful to let the pets go. The new adopters so often have just lost a beloved pet and bringing the grieving family and the dog together is so heartwarming. Then you make a spot for another shelter animal!

I always adopt, because if you don't, all those dogs get killed! :(

I'm actually looking for people to donate to a film I am making about a dog and it being rescued. We must show the world how truly important dogs are!

If you'd like to learn more and check it out, please visit the website. The film is called "Dakota"
