Adoption Procedure

Welcome to the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation adoption program. In order to qualify as a candidate to adopt a Heigl Hound you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Provide picture identification with your current address.
  • Establish the knowledge and consent of your landlord.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the responsibilities associated with providing a dog with humane training, necessary medical care and loving kindness.
  • Be willing and able to assume those responsibilities.

If you would like to apply to adopt one of our dogs please fill out the adoption application form below. A representative will then contact you to discuss the adoption. As part of the adoption approval procedure you will be asked to schedule and complete a consultation interview and pass a home check. This helps us to make sure that the dog you have selected is the right fit for you.

When you have been approved as a adopter, our dog will then be placed in your home for a trial period of up to 14 days to ensure compatibility and a smooth transitional into your care.

After the trial period is complete and if all parties involved are content, most notably the dog, then to complete the adoption process you will need to sign our Adoption Contract and donate a minimum of $150 for the adoption. The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and your donation will be tax deductible.

Please understand that some of our dogs have suffered from ill treatment and neglect in the past. We undertake these checks to ensure that our animals go to good, responsible homes that will care for them for the rest of their lives.

The Heigl Foundation will always remain available for questions, concerns and advice and may also help to fund additional training for your new dog.

All of our dogs are located in the Los Angeles area. If you are not from Southern California or are applying to adopt a Heigl Hound from out of state, while we would encourage your application, please understand that it may not be feasible to place one of our dogs with you due to the logisitcal issues (such as transportation and home checks) that will arise as result of your geographical location.

Our adoption form is divided into six parts, all of which need to be completed for a valid submission:
